About Nunkuwarrin Yunti
As an Aboriginal Community Controlled Health Service in Adelaide, energy cost management for Nunkuwarrin Yunti is not their core business. However, it is a material cost to the business and money not spent on electricity can be spent on improving health outcomes for their Aboriginal patients.
Undertaking Energy Audits
In 2012 Balance Carbon performed an Energy Audit for Nunkuwarrin Yunti, identifying a potential saving of $20,133/annum based on three key actions: replacement of the HVAC system, installation of energy efficiency lighting and reviewing electricity contracts. Nunkuwarrin subsequently applied for and received a Community Energy Efficiency Program Grant to undertake these projects.
In 2015 Balance Carbon revisited Nunkuwarrin Yunti and re-performed the Energy Audit. This demonstrated that the actions undertaken were generating savings of $26,612/annum, exceeding initial estimates. We also identified a further potential savings of $25,136 with a rate of return of 3.4 years on expenditure.
What is an Energy Audit?
Performed in accordance with Australian Standard AS 3598, energy audits evaluate current energy use, inspect the uses of energy and provide energy improvement recommendations. There are three levels of audit, providing different levels of accuracy for measurement and recommendations.
Maturing Environmental Management
Nunkuwarrin Yunti has significantly evolved their environmental management system in the years between energy audits, developing and implementing an Environmental Monitoring Policy. This governance document embeds sustainability into the business of providing top class Aboriginal health care.
The Environmental Management Policy, improvement actions and staff behaviour are encouraged by the “Green Mob”. The Green Mob seeks to provide fellow staff with sustainability information and to reduce non-essential energy use throughout the organisation.
The Importance of Evaluation and Continuous Improvement
Good project management principles require the evaluation of the success of a project. Nunkuwarrin Yunti re-performed the energy audit to provide the outcome reporting required under the Grant received. Not content to rest on their laurels, Nunkuwarrin Yunti is now seeking to identify additional energy savings to provide continuous improvement and additional cost savings.
